How to Get More Followers on Social Media
For businesses looking to dip their feet in the digital marketing world, there’s much more to be done than simply creating a social media profile, posting content, and worrying about how to get more followers on social media.
While posting relevant content is important and should always be a part of your social marketing strategy, having a solid (relevant) follower base is a key factor for social success and gaining followers on social media is not always an easy task.
A wise man once said, “If you build it, he will come.” Unfortunately, that’s not the case when it comes to digital marketing which is why I’ve put together this handy list of 10 tricks to increase your social media following.
10 Best Tips to Get More Followers on Your Social Media Profiles
1. Add Social Profiles to Your Signatures
If you’re running a business, there’s a high likelihood that you send your fair share of e-mails throughout the day. If you do, this is your chance to promote your social media profiles!
By promoting your profiles in your e-mail signature, recipients are likely to come across your profile usernames more than once – Why wouldn’t you take advantage of an easy and free promotion opportunity?
Pro Tip: Utilize the logo icon for each profile to maximize visual appeal!
2. Keep a Professional Profile Description
Your profile description or “About Me” section is where your potential followers will get their first taste of who you are and why they should follow you. This is where you should be selling your profile while maintaining professional.
Keep your profile description short, sweet and to the point. But don’t forget to still be engaging!
Don’t be afraid to cross-promote your pages on your other profiles!
Sometimes your followers simply just aren’t aware that you’re active on other social outlets, so it’s your job to guide them there.
4. Use Relevant Hashtags
One of the greatest ways to attract followers, especially on Twitter and
Instagram, is to use relevant hashtags. The key word here is relevant.
Sure, if you swallow your pride and add #followforfollow or #f4f to your posts, you’re probably going to see an increase in followers, but are they followers that you want?
No, probably not.
Utilize hashtags that are relevant to your target audience so you can maintain a following that actually wants to engage with your content. This way, not only will you have more followers, but you are also more likely to have a more engaged and active audience.
5. Encourage Sharing
One of the great things about social media is being able to share content. Sharing is apparently caring, so why not encourage it?
When you have a relevant following and engaging organic content, encouraging followers to share your posts won’t be hard. It’s as easy as including a “Share if you _____” call to action.
Once your audience starts sharing your content, other relevant followers will flow in your direction!
6. Use Humour and Be Relatable
I can’t stress this enough. Social media users don’t want to follow or engage with a robot – so be yourself!
This means that you should always be mindful of the fact that you are a person with thoughts, feelings, opinions and a sense of humour and these traits should be reflected in your profile.
Remember not to over do it, though. Sometimes just a simple smiling emoji or “LOL” will do the trick. As long as you are respectful, posting content that humanizes your profiles and reflects your personality will significantly attract more followers and increase engagement. (This works best if accompanied by visually appealing and relevant content)
7. Stay Active
This tip is self-explanatory. Maintaining an active profile is key not only to attracting new followers, but keeping your current followers.
Make sure to post on each profile more than once a day. Prospective followers will likely look through your content before following and will be more likely to click the follow button if they see a constant stream of content.
If you’re worrying about not having enough time to post throughout various times of the day, check out programs like Buffer to help you out!
8. Offer Exclusive Content
Switch it up a bit! We live in an amazing technological age and have so many resources at our fingertips. Use your other social profiles not only for promotion to other accounts but also to offer exclusives!
Remind those who “Like” or “Follow” your pages that there is so much more than what they are seeing. Send them over to your other pages by promoting exclusive content, and keeping organic content different on each social profile.
This will ensure that followers don’t only flock to one account and forget to bother with the rest.
For example, Snapchat and Instagram Stories. You should be utilizing these tools to provide an exclusive behind the scenes look at you and/or your business. When your audience knows about this, they will specifically seek out that other profile to get that juicy exclusive content.
9. Acknowledge and Respond
Utilize the engagement that you receive on your posts. If someone sends you a comment, respond! Even if it’s just a “thank you.”
Users engaging with your profiles may not actually be followers, by engaging with them and responding you are more likely to encourage them to click that follow button.
Not only should you be constantly responding, you should also be responding in a timely manner. The quicker, the better! This increases ten-fold if you are receiving complaints.
10, Flush and Follow
This tip is my favourite and the one I personally find works the best.
Flushing refers to “unfollowing” users who may be irrelevant or inactive. Some will also unfollow users who aren’t following them back – this can be an act of flushing as well.
If you are looking to unfollow users who aren’t following your profile back on Instagram, I find that Websta works best.
Following is another important factor for this step. Search relevant hashtags and find users who you believe would want to follow you and give them a follow. Do this for relevant social media influencers as well.
Repeat this process weekly or bi-weekly and you will see an increase of followers in no time!
The Short and The Sweet
Now that you’ve read through the list, you can see that there’s really no shameless “Get Followers Fast” schemes that will be of any benefit to yourself or your business. If you want to see results, you will have to put in a little bit of work.
Having said that, if you follow these 10 tips listed above, I am confident that not only will you see an increase in followers, but you’ll also benefit from an increase in engagement.
