Website Optimization Tips For Spring
It’s website optimization tips time! Why? It’s official, spring is here and what better time to give your website a solid Search Engine Optimization (SEO) overhaul.
This time of year is prime for many business sectors. One of which stands out for me is Tourism. Particularly, Niagara Falls Tourism. As a social media marketing and SEO consultant based in the Niagara Region, my agency regularly offers website optimization tips to local businesses. I highly recommend all Niagara attractions, restaurants and hotels take note and refresh their website with a well researched search optimization strategy for the upcoming season. Just think of how many people are searching for “things to do in Niagara Falls” for their upcoming spring and summer long weekends.
Time to roll your sleeves up and let’s get this spring-cleaning started. The following are the most essential website optimization tips to focus on for your SEO refresh:
It’s ideal to revisit your metadata each month. If you aren’t able to do that you need to make time to do this at least once every quarter.
You’ll want to do some keyword research and analysis to see if there are new search terms your potential customers are using to search for products and services in your niche.
Once you’ve determined a new set of keywords and search phrases you should edit your current meta <description> tags to include combinations of these new keywords.
You could also consider revising the <title>, <alt>, and <description> tags for all images on your website using the new keywords and search phrases you found.
If you’re using WordPress, I recommend the WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast. This plugin is superb in so many ways in that it provides meta functionality as well as incorporating Open Graph for social media. It also gives you a very useful page analysis feature that is perfect for checking your work.
The Open Graph element allows you to optimize social shares from your website by allowing you to customize specific titles, descriptions and images for shares on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and other social media sites.
Google’s +1 Button
You already have social icons on your website which link to your company social profiles. You likely also have badges so users can ‘like’ or ‘tweet’ or ‘follow’ you on whichever social network they choose.
Have you added the Google +1 button for users to share your content on Google’s popular and growing social network? After all, you want to rank high in Google search rankings right? What better way to do this than to use Google’s social sharing products?
Be sure to include the +1 button on all your pages and posts. The more +1’s you receive, the greater likelihood that your website will rank prominently for keywords. The next item this list will explain exactly why this is important.
This is probably one of the most important and often ignored website optimization tips that is essential to improving your SEO and search engine rankings overall.
Google Authorship plays a huge roll in your websites search rankings. It links all your content with you, your website, and your Google+ profile. Authorship benefits are twofold. Not only does it help you rank high for your targeted keywords, but it also will help to get users to click on your link and not your competitors.
It’s been said that search listings “with authorship enabled receive around 120% more clicks” than those without. How’s that for website optimization tips?
Website Social Icons
Have you set up a Pinterest account and an Instagram account for your business? If not go do so now and meet me back here.
A key component of your content marketing strategy should include social marketing strategies for the “other two” HUGE social networks. If you haven’t heard of Pinterest or Instagram or you haven’t played with each you’re missing out on prime real estate to promote your products, engage with potential customers, and drive traffic to your website, ultimately giving your site really good “SEO juice” and help your search engine rankings.
Post relevant, remarkable content that users will share. Add a “Follow Me on Pinterest” and “Follow Me on Instagram” badge on your website. Last but not least, make it easy for users to share your amazing content on Pinterest directly from your website by adding a “Pin It” button to all your pages and posts.
In terms of website optimization tips, website speed is an area I find is neglected by some webmasters. Have you checked how fast your site loads? Make your website faster with Google’s PageSpeed Insights Tool.
What is Page Speed Insights? Google says: “PageSpeed Insights analyzes the content of a web page, then generates suggestions to make that page faster. Reducing page load times can reduce bounce rates and increase conversion rates.”
It’s a useful tool. Try it. Remember that PageSpeed helps for not only the user experience but it’s also aides with your SEO. If you get a score of 70-90 you’re doing all right. The closer to 90 is more ideal.
You’ll be surprised with how many broken links can appear in a site that hasn’t had a SEO audit or refresh in a few years. Go to your webmasters account with Google and Bing and source out any 404 errors that are detected.
Once you’ve found the error pages you can direct them to an appropriate page using 301 redirects.
While you’re in your webmasters account it may also be a good idea to check your index status and make sure all your important pages are being indexed by each search engine.
To sum up these website optimization tips, I recommend maintaining and tweaking your websites SEO each month. This includes both on-page and off-page SEO. If this just isn’t possible, a spring-cleaning is mandatory. Make sure you get it done.
You may want to decide on a course of action after you perform a SEO audit. You may decide that you need a refresh of your entire website, design, structure, and functionality. If you haven’t added a well-optimized and current Blog you’re missing out on fundamental SEO benefits. If you haven’t added social sharing to your pages and posts you’re making your amazing content difficult for users to share.
Maybe you need to add e-commerce to your site or a new gallery. Take this time to commit to a sound digital strategy, with content, search, and social being the key marketing elements you’ll use. Consider these website optimization tips and best of luck improving your search engine rankings. If you need a hand, I’m here to help you!
